Mother-of-pearl is the material which covers the inner part of some shells. Mother-of-pearl has been used since Antiquity. This material is much required for decoration and marquetery. The colour of mother-of-pearl is given by organic pigments contained in the conchyoline. Its iridescent reflections and its varied colours make it a very appraisal material.
Many different colours of mother-of-pearl exist. Black mother-of-pearl as well as “frank” mother-of-pearl have a deep whiteness. We find mother-of-pearl in Australia, in Indonesia, in Madagascar, in Philippines, on the West coast of India or in the Sea of Oman.
Aisthésis also used mother-of-pearl from Tahiti in the making of the basin of its dream catcher “Esmeralda”.
