    Shagreen

This exceptional material, skin of shark or ray, shagreen crystallizes light. Pearlised and glittering, it calls out to you. Rigid, it imposes to you… Organic material, it vibrates to the rhythm of its natural energy.

Unknown and elusive, shagreen has distant origins. It inspires and fascinates the cabinet maker. In the course of history, this mysterious material disappears on a number of occasions. In each of its reappearances, the cabinet maker reinvents its technique and adapts to it.

    History

Japon / VIII eme. First discovery. Shagreen is used for daily objects " inros", small boxes for medicines and for handles of samourai swords.

France and Europe / XVIII eme. Jean Claude Galluchat, master laether artisan of Louis XV and Misses Pompadour, highlights this material, which becomes luxurious. He used it to cover small jewelry boxes and precious objects, in fashion. He gave it his name.

France and Europe / 1930 - Art Deco. Reapparance.

France and Europe / 1985. Rediscovery, especially thanks to the cabinet maker, Jerome Cordie, who develops and perfects its technique, for furnishing and leather craft.
